rural Guyana

a country of rich diversity

Guyana; located on the north coast of South America, is a country of rich cultural diversity and striking geographical features. Bordered by Venezuela, Brazil and Surname, it is characterized by lush rainforests, vast savannahs and a sprawling coastline. The country’s cultural fabric is woven from African, Indian, Indigenous, European and Chinese influences, resulting in a vibrant mix of traditions, languages and cuisines.

Despite it’s small population, Guyana’s communities maintain a strong sense of identity. Local industries, traditionally centered around agriculture, mining and small-scale trade, make up a majority of the country’s economic activity.

the economic shift

The discovery of vast offshore oil reserves in 2015 has dramatically reshaped its economic landscape, attracting significant investment and increasing government revenues. This newfound wealth has the potential to modernize infrastructure, improve public services, and drive economic growth on a national scale.

However, while urban areas are seeing development, many rural communities face barriers to accessing these opportunities due to their geographical isolation. Many small businesses in these rural areas lack the financial resources and support systems needed to grow with the expanding economy.
