school is across the water
Wakapoa is a rural Indigenous community made up of 17 small islands and a central mainland. The only secondary school is on the mainland, requiring students (grades 7–12) to travel by boat. While transportation for grades 1–6 is covered, secondary students receive only a partial subsidy — leaving many families unable to afford the remaining boat fare.
It costs approximately $27/month to cover a child’s subsidized boat fare and $34/year for essential school supplies.
direct support that gets kids to class
Through a new partnership between the Kiwanis Club of Northampton and the Uplift Project, we pay the exact costs that keep children from attending school: monthly boat transportation and basic supplies. Funds are delivered directly to the boat captains and toward supplies, ensuring students make it to class — consistently.and $34/year for essential school supplies.
- Payments go directly to boat captains.
- Teachers and families help monitor attendance.
- Only children actively attending remain in the program.
